ein Jahrhundert, ein Kampf

ein Jahrhundert, ein Kampf is a personal examination of the intersection of textile work and gender roles

The objects are an attempt at reclaiming and subverting textile works that are often socially devalued as unskilled feminine tasks. I’ve been on both sides in my life – first I got bullied for being “too good” at handcrafts as a child (I liked knitting, boys aren’t supposed to like knitting), then I was told my interests were too “masculine” (I worked in mechanics workshops and electronics, trans women aren’t supposed to do that).

The imagery represents my own struggles with transmisogyny and intersects them with struggles of women at the historical Bauhaus. They were expected to do textile work, I was also expected to, but at the same time punished for recreating oppressive gender roles.

All objects were created on a modified punchcard knitting machine interfaced with a computer, the designs are pixel art transformed into textile.”
