“This embroidery kit is a collaboration between Folkglory Design and the Tiraz Centre (www.tirazcentre.org). The tatreez patterns featured in this kit were meticulously studied, analyzed, and sourced from Intifada dresses in the Widad Kawar Collection.
About the Intifada dress:
When the first Intifada began on December 9, 1987, a new dress, thobe appeared that was not embroidered with traditional patterns. The thobe was embroidered with political and cultural symbols: Palestinian flags, the Dome of the Rock, maps of Palestine, and olive branches. The dresses featured the Palestinian flag’s red, green, white, and black colours. Sometimes, the flag can be found on the chest panel in embroidery or applique.
Such dresses were made in defiance of the Israeli ban on public display of these colours and after the imprisonment of Palestinian artists who used them in their paintings.”
