SMILEOPOLY

Who are the Tooth Fairy’s Favourites?

Door: Pauline Bernichan

“Smileopoly is a narrative system that converts users’ history of dental alterations into a score that ranks them on a scale of ‘social privilege’ according to their access to dental care. Teeth lay bare a person’s biography with their good or bad fortune and the aim of this project is to highlight the interdependence between socio-economic status and ease of access to dental care within ‘social and inclusive’ healthcare systems such as those in Europe.

The project is underpinned by analysing the economic factors of dental care, field research in a dental prosthesis laboratory and fair, and interviews with patients from different backgrounds across Europe. Smileopoly proposes that if the eyes are the reflection of the soul, then our smiles are the reflection of our position in the social pyramid.”

Through this mobile medical unit that resembles a photo booth, I’m aiming to unravel the complex correlation between access to dentistry, social affiliation, and social influence. How can design be used to reveal rather than hide?”
