“Times Square is often referred to as the Crossroads of the World. In the Summer of 2015, I was invited by my friends at the Times Square Alliance to be their inaugural artist in residence. Working with choreographer / film-maker Mark DeChiazza and a group of students from NYU, we created a series of filmmaking experiments in Times Square, looking at the space as a potential site of portraiture.
At the same time, we investigated using webcams and social media postings in the area as a possible source of material. During this time, I discovered that, during much of the year, Times Square is the most Instagram’ed place on earth, with approximately 17,000 posts per day. This means that every five seconds or so, someone commits a selfie in Times Square. This video work montages these photographs, in which people lay claim to their presence in the ultimate urban epicenter.”
