“the very first action of the lesbian avengers was a september 1992 protest in new york city against the rejection of “the rainbow curriculum” for elementary school students that included gay and lesbian people in diversity lessons. this multicultural curriculum was under attack by both homophobic and racist right-wing groups.
an all-lesbian marching band made its way to an elementary school in queens school district 24, where the opposition to the rainbow curriculum was the strongest. here the avengers gave out lavender balloons that read “ASK ABOUT LESBIAN LIVES.” they also wore t-shirts that read “i was a LESBIAN child.”
