Ruha Benjamin maakte met dit boek duidelijk hoe racisme op allerlei manieren in onze huidige technologie terug te vinden is en wat de gevolgen daarvan zijn. Ze schreeft dit boek in 2019 en verwees daarin naar allerlei recente ontwikkelingen en onderzoeken.
Het boek is te lezen als een veel bredere kritische beschouwing op hoe op dit moment technologie sociale en maatschappelijke problemen versterkt en welke rol ontwerpers daarin hebben.
